Current book project:
This book retells incredible life-stories of selected historical individuals who endured far more dangerous political circumstances than you and I have – unless you have a truly fateful story to share with me! These individuals had the foresight to leave a written record of what they went through and how they dealt with it. Their writing was a way of reflecting, overcoming and teaching. They shared their beliefs through their stories, told in diverse ways. Our distance from them, in time and place, allows us to reflect on how others reflected on their times and on their own actions, and now we can reconsider how we react to today’s political turmoil. They may have shed some tears, but they didn’t fall into inaction or over-reaction. In various ways, they’ve controlled the narrative about who they were and what they did. They talk about political action from first-person points of view in widely varied situations and careers. Each in a unique way shows us “how to be a political animal” – and why it’s never easy.
